Clinical Psychologist

Dr Catherine Cheung completed her Bsc (Hons) in Psychology, MSc in Cognitive and Decision-Making Sciences, and her Doctorate in Clinical Psychology at University College, London.

Dr Cheung currently runs a Specialist NHS Autism Service in Central London. Her expertise is in working with people with Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASD) with a range of abilities and across the lifespan. She is formally trained and has extensive clinical experiences of conducting autism diagnostic assessments and cognitive assessments, and adapting evidence-based psychological therapy models for people with ASD. She is familiar with the presentation of autism in women, as well as in people with complex life experiences and presentations.

Prior to her current roles, Dr Cheung has worked extensively in different NHS settings (i.e. inpatient settings, community services, research teams) and with clients with complex mental health needs, acute and long-term physical health issues, neurological conditions and brain injuries, and neurodevelopmental disorders. Her varied experiences allow her to be familiar with a range of clinical presentations. She also has a strong awareness and understanding of different cultural, ethnic, racial and societal backgrounds and works sensitively with different beliefs and customs.

Dr Cheung is trained in a variety of therapy models, including Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), Compassion Focused Therapy (CFT), narrative therapy and other systemic approaches. She can offer her work in English, Cantonese and Mandarin.

Dr Cheung is committed to holistic, individualised approaches. This means understanding her clients in terms of their life experiences, cultural and social contexts, personal attributes, strengths and resilience, and thinking beyond diagnostic labels. Her assessments and treatments are tailored to each client’s needs, values and goals. She values being creative, flexible and integrative in her clinical work. She believes that building trusting, honest and respectful relationships with her clients is fundamental to making positive differences in their lives.
