Dr Tara Shahkarami first began her training with a degree in Psychology at Kingston University, before going on to complete an MSc in Environmental Consultancy and a Professional Doctorate in Counselling Psychology at UWE, Bristol. Her path has taken her through a range of NHS psychological services, including Neuropsychology, Neuropsychiatry, Acute Inpatient, Crisis, and both Primary and Secondary Care Psychology, where she has supported adults, young people (13+), families, and older adults, and into specialist neurological services supporting individuals with stroke and Functional Neurological Disorder (FND), which has shaped the way she now works with clients.
In the therapy room, Dr Shahkarami brings a holistic and relational approach. She draws on training in a broad range of evidence-based models, including Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), Psychodynamic Therapy, Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), Cognitive Analytic Therapy (CAT), Schema-Informed Therapy, and Mindfulness-Based Approaches, and a particular interest in functional neurological disorders, medically-unexplained symptoms, embodied trauma, and neurological rehabilitation, but most importantly, she adapts what she does to fit the person in front of her.Â
Working from an integrative and relational perspective, Dr Shahkarami believes therapy is most effective when grounded in a trusting relationship where clients feel genuinely heard and accepted. She aims to create a warm, compassionate, and non-judgemental space, allowing clients to safely explore their experiences and develop deeper self-understanding. By considering the whole person – including their unique biology, relationships, identity, life experiences, and wider environment – she works alongside clients with curiosity and respect to explore patterns, build on existing strengths, and move toward realistic, sustainable changes that align with their values.
All clinicians at The Chelsea Psychology Clinic are trained to conduct comprehensive assessments, considering you as a whole person rather than a specific issue. They tailor treatment and integrate multiple therapeutic perspectives to create a plan that is both evidence-based and uniquely suited to you.
Dr Shahkarami works with individuals facing a wide range of challenges, including depression, anxiety, stress, burnout, trauma, relationship difficulties, ADHD, ASD, low self-esteem, life transitions, and the emotional impact of physical health conditions, and has specialist experience in functional disorders, medically-unexplained symptoms, embodied responses to trauma, and mindful living. Whatever someone is struggling with, Dr Shahkarami aims to offer support that recognises and respects their unique needs and experiences.Â
Alongside her therapy work, Dr Shahkarami is also involved in tutoring aspiring psychologists internationally and collaborating with universities to deliver talks and workshops, reflecting her passion for supporting the next generation of psychologists and exploring the intersections between biological, social, and psychological sciences to enrich our understanding of wellbeing.Â
