Dr. Lisa Matthias completed her doctorate in Counselling Psychology at University of East London after having completed a BSc (with honours) in Psychology at Coventry University and a MSc in Psychological Research Methods at the University of Leicester. Lisa’s doctoral research explored self-compassion in qualified counselling psychologists—an area of particular interest to her—with the view that this then can be developed in both trainee and qualified clinicians so that they can provide the highest standards of care to their clients, alongside practising effective self-care.
Lisa has extensive experience working in the NHS and private sector, where she has delivered evidence-based approaches to both adults and children experiencing a wide range of mental health difficulties. Lisa has worked with individuals experiencing anxiety disorders (e.g., generalised anxiety, social anxiety, panic disorder, post-traumatic stress disorder, and obsessive compulsive disorder). She has experience working with depression, major depression, recurrent depression, bipolar disorder, anger issues, relationship difficulties, abuse, trauma, and low self-esteem. Lisa also has experience of working with individuals with a diagnosis of personality disorder, schizophrenia, schizoaffective disorder, psychosis, ASC and ADHD to name a few.
Lisa is a committed to meeting the needs of her clients wherever they are on their therapeutic journey. She offers an integrative approach to psychological therapy, in which she combines several evidence-based psychological therapies to suit the individual’s needs. Lisa draws on therapeutic approaches including: Humanistic therapy, Psychodynamic therapy, Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), Compassion-Focused Therapy (CFT), Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), Mindfulness-Based Cognitive Therapy (MBCT), Dialectical Behavioural Therapy (DBT), and Schema Therapy (ST).
