The borderline personality disorder, for a very long time, was being seen by professionals as a condition that is impossible to treat. These days there are many very good evidence-based treatments for borderline personality disorder. The three main ones are the Dialectical Behaviour Therapy, and that tends to be a therapy that focuses on people reducing impulsive behaviour, self-harm, and learning new skills to regulate their emotions. There is Mentalisation Based Treatment that focuses on helping the person develop an understanding of their mind and the mind of other people. And then there’s Schema Therapy, which tends to help people engage in much more meaningful relationships and break long term, lifelong patterns of relating to others that can be incredibly unhelpful to them. All these three approaches have very, very good evidence for being effective with borderline personality disorder, and we tend to choose depending on which area the person’s difficulties are mostly located in. So if they have lots of impulsive behaviours, then we are more likely to choose something such as the Dialectical Behaviour Therapy, whereas if their difficulties are more relational, we tend to make a choice between Mentalisation Based Treatment or Schema Therapy.
