The most effective therapies for dealing with trauma are cognitive behavioural therapy, and within that we usually do something that we call exposure. So we go back through the very traumatic events that people have experienced, until they become desensitised in terms of their emotional response to those experiences. And then other approaches that go much more into childhood trauma, such as schema therapy, where we use a whole range of exponential techniques such as imagery, to create safety for memories that people have from childhood that are very aversive and difficult, but also to rescript some of those memories in order to help the person have a much more comforting experience of some of their childhood early traumas.
