Addiction is when somebody becomes dependent on either a substance, or sometimes it can even be a particular behaviour, in a way where their dependence on this substance or activity is so significant that they will actually ignore the fact that this activity or substance might have lots of negative consequences on them and their life and their functioning over time. So there’s multiple and different types of addiction. It could be addiction to substances, such as cannabis, cocaine, heroine, amphetamines, a whole range of different sort of drugs that people can become addicted to, or it could be a particular behaviour like people can become addicted to shopping or people can become addicted to, for instance, checking their phone constantly or being online on social media constantly. People can become addicted to something like gambling. So there’s a whole different range of different behaviours or substances. The reason that addiction can be very troubling is that a lot of the time, people can then have very serious consequences in terms of their relationships, their ability to perform at work as a result of their addiction.
