Self harm is a particular behaviour that people can engage in if they suffer from incredibly intense emotional states and they are trying to find a way to regulate their emotions. So, self harm, again, is one of those behaviours that has hugely been misrepresented. People can be seen to be manipulative because they are self-harming or attempting to influence other people’s behaviour. But our predominant understanding of self-harm is that it’s the coping strategy that people engage in as a way of trying to manage something that they have no other way to manage, or to express or communicate something that they can’t find the words to communicate or express in any alternative way.
