Typically, the people that benefit the most are the people that are highly motivated. So what is really important to bear in mind about psychological therapy is that people use it in very different ways. Some people use it in the most supportive way, which is completely appropriate as well. But the people that use it in a supportive way might just experience some relief from the experience of talking to somebody that is impartial and able to give them a psychological understanding of themselves, but they might not see as immediate symptom relief. Other people who might be coming to therapy in order to make quite clear and concrete changes to their lives will use it in some respects in the most effective way because the level of motivation of the client really has a huge bearing on the outcome of the therapy. Also, clients who have formed a good therapeutic relationship with their therapist, all the research has shown, are likely to achieve the best outcome. So it’s really important to see a therapist that actually one feels very trusting in and feels comfortable with and can form a good rapport and a good collaborative relationship with.
